Chief of Staff: The Leader's Right-Hand Person

In the corporate world, certain positions remain unknown to the general public, yet they play a vital role in the functioning of an organization.

This is particularly true of the Chief of Staff (who can be likened to the role of a political chief of staff).

This role has been growing rapidly in France over the past few years.

Once confined to scale-ups or CAC 40 companies, it is rapidly becoming more widespread, becoming an indispensable asset for all ambitious CEOs.

Born out of the ingenuity of the US military before spreading to the political and private spheres, the Chief of Staff is often described as the leader's "right-hand man. " They embody a subtle blend of strategy and operations, with two key responsibilities that forge their importance within the company.

First and foremost, like the Chief of Staff, the Chief of Staff undertakes substantive work, providing sound advice and ensuring meticulous follow-up on strategic issues.

But he is also a true facilitator in the CEO's life, strivingto optimize the executive's precious time by taking on major responsibilities such as:

  • Prioritizing issues

  • Internal and external communication

  • Preparing for crucial meetings.

In certain cases, he may take on full responsibility for a strategic project such as an external growth operation, a reorganization, or the launch of a new growth driver.

However, the role of Chief of Staff is not tailor-made; it requires exceptional flexibility and the ability to dive into any issue with agility.

In France, this role is often seen as a career accelerator for high-potential employees, while in the US, it takes on a more senior dimension. In both cases, the consulting sector appears to be fertile ground for developing these multifaceted talents.

The Institut Choiseul and Roland Berger study highlights the qualities essential for excelling as a Chief of Staff:

  • Adaptability

  • Emotional intelligence

  • Anticipation

  • Confidentiality

  • Ability to challenge the leader.

On the management side, there are many expectations:

  • Day-to-day management in the manner of a high-level executive assistant

  • Strategic support as a thinking partner

  • Streamlining internal communications

But also, and above all, a position tailored to the executive... and his Chief of Staff!
